GTT confirms tank order for Yang Ming’s LNG-powered containerships

France’s GTT said it had secured a tank design order from South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for Yang Ming’s LNG-powered containerships.

GTT said that these five very large container vessels with a capacity of 15,500 teu each will have one single LNG fuel tank, with a capacity of 12,700 cbm.

Moreover, the tanks will be fitted with GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane containment technology, offering a low and guaranteed boil-off rate for improved vessel operations, it said.

HHI will deliver the vessels between the second quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.

LNG Prime reported on May 22, citing shipbuilding sources, that Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport picked HHI to build five LNG-powered containerships.

The sources said at the time that the vessels will feature GTT’s Mark III Flex containment system and also MAN ME-GI propulsion.

After that, Yang Ming and HHI signed the shipbuilding deal on May 31.

Also, Yang Ming will pay about $937 million for the five vessels, or $187 million per ship.

Yang Ming’s current operating fleet comprises 93 vessels, with a capacity of about 705,000 teu.

With these five LNG dual-fuel container vessels, Yang Ming will optimize its fleet, reduce operating costs, and also improve carbon emission reduction, it previously said.
