KSOE reveals big order for LNG-powered vessels

South Korea’s shipbuilder Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has secured an order to build six containerships for an unidentified Asian owner.

The order for the 15,000 TEU vessels has a price tag of 900 billion won ($826 million), the firm said in a filing to the stock exchange.

Furthermore, KSOE’s unit Hyundai Heavy Industries will build four vessels while Hyundai Samho will construct two ships.

The yards will start delivering the vessels from the first half of 2023.

KSOE did not reveal any further info but several local media reports suggest that the vessels would sail on LNG.

To remind, Hyundai Samho is already building six LNG-powered neo-Panamax containerships for Singapore’s Eastern Pacific Shipping.

Moreover, all of the 15,000 TEU vessels will go on charter to French shipping group CMA CGM.

LNG Prime understands that Eastern Pacific Shipping could be the owner behind the latest KSOE order but we could not confirm this information by the time this article was published.
