McDermott secures Qatargas job

LNG producing giant Qatargas has selected Houston-based McDermott to deliver front-end engineering and design work for Qatar Petroleum’s North Field South project.

This project is the second phase of Qatari LNG production expansion plans.

The contract scope includes the replication of five offshore wellhead platforms, according to a McDermott statement on Wednesday.

Additionally, McDermott said it will execute the FEED from its Doha office starting immediately.

Qatar’s North Field is not a new playground for McDermott as the firm has executed projects in the field for more than thirty years.

Natural gas from the giant field goes to the world’s largest LNG complex located in Ras Laffan.

QP’s unit Qatargas operates six LNG mega trains at Ras Laffan with a capacity of 77 mtpa but the Qatari firms are working on staged expansion plans.

The first phase, or the North Field East project, will add four trains with a capacity of 33 mtpa in the Ras Laffan complex.

The North Field South project represents the second phase of Qatar’s LNG expansion plans.

This phase would add 16 mtpa of LNG capacity at the Ras Laffan complex for a total of 126 mtpa.
