GTT scores contract from HD Hyundai Heavy for 17 LNG carriers

French LNG containment giant GTT has won a large order from South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to design the tanks of 17 LNG carriers with a capacity of 174,000 cbm.

Paris-based GTT said the tanks will be fitted with the company’s Mark III Flex membrane containment system.

GTT said HHI will deliver the vessels to a “leading LNG player” between the first quarter of 2027 and the third quarter of 2029.

State-owned LNG giant QatarEnergy recently signed a deal for 17 LNG carriers with HHI as it continues to hold talks with other yards over the second phase of its giant shipbuilding program.

The shipbuilding deal is worth about $3.9 billion.

Prior to this, QatarEnergy signed a deal with HHI in 2020 to reserve slots for its shipbuilding program.

The contract marks the start of the second phase of QatarEnergy’s LNG ship acquisition program.

Under the first phase, QatarEnergy contracted 60 LNG carriers at South Korea’s three shipbuilders HHI, Samsung Heavy, and Hanwha Ocean, and China’s Hudong-Zhonghua.

This agreement brings the total number of confirmed new LNG vessels to be delivered to QatarEnergy and its affiliates to 77, with more to follow, QatarEnergy previously said.
