Borealis to charter dual-fuel LPG newbuild from IINO

Austrian chemical firm Borealis will charter a dual-fuel very large gas carrier from Japanese shipping firm IINO Kaiun Kaisha as it looks to slash emissions.

Sotuh Kore’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering will build the vessels and deliver it in the first quarter of 2023.

The 91,000-cbm vessel is IINO’s second VLGC with a LPG dual-fuel engine.

In addition, the newbuild will feature DSME’s shaft generator motor system. The SGM enables the generation of electric-power from the LPG dual fuel-engine during navigation and contributes to lower fuel/lubricant oil consumption and lower emissions, the duo said in a statement.

This shipping solution will support Borealis future sourcing of feedstock for their propane dehydrogenation plant in Kallo, Belgium, currently under construction, the statement said.
