Cheniere’s Corpus Christi plant currently liquefies natural gas at three operational trains, each with a capacity of about 5 mtpa.
In June 2022, Cheniere made the final investment decision on the Corpus Christi Stage 3 expansion project, worth about $8 billion, while compatriot Bechtel officially started construction on the project in October of the same year.
The project includes building seven midscale trains, each with an expected liquefaction capacity of about 1.49 mtpa.
In March 2025, Cheniere achieved substantial completion of the first liquefaction train at the Corpus Christi Stage 3 expansion project, while the company recently started producing LNG at the second train.
Construction report
Cheniere’s unit, Corpus Christi Liquefaction, said in the May construction report filed with the US FERC on Wednesday that the overall project completion rate for Stage 3 is 85.4 percent.
The project was 83.8 percent complete at the end of April this year.
Stage 3 engineering and procurement were 98.8 percent and 99.8 percent complete as of the end of May 2025, respectively, while subcontract and direct hire construction work were 90.8 percent and 61.4 percent complete, respectively.
During May, key work fronts included aboveground piping in Train 2 – 6 and outside boundary limits (OSBL), concrete pours in Trains 4 – 7 and OSBL, underground piping installation in Trains 6 – 7 and OSBL, and equipment setting in Trains 3 – 7.
CCL said additional continued work includes road improvements, drainage work, and mobilization of temporary facilities, equipment, and personnel.
During June, Bechtel will continue installation of aboveground piping, continue insulation of aboveground piping, and continue cable pulls at Trains 2 and 3.
It will also continue with concrete foundations and pedestal works, as well as the installation of structural steel at Trains 4 and 5. Additionally, excavation will continue to support the upcoming concrete pours at Trains 6 and 7.
Further expansion
Upon substantial completion of all seven trains of CCL Stage 3 in 2026, the expected total production capacity of the Corpus Christi liquefaction facility will be over 25 mtpa of LNG.
In addition to this expansion, Cheniere just made a positive final investment decision to build two more midscale trains at its Corpus Christi LNG plant.
The CCL midscale trains 8 and 9 project is being built adjacent to the Corpus Christi Stage 3 project and consists of two midscale trains with an expected total liquefaction capacity of over 3 mtpa of LNG and other debottlenecking infrastructure.
Upon completion of the project, and together with expected debottlenecking and CCL Stage 3, the Corpus Christi LNG terminal is expected to reach over 30 mtpa in total liquefaction capacity later this decade, according to Cheniere.
