ExxonMobil appoints Mozambique head

US energy giant ExxonMobil has appointed Johanna Boothey as lead country manager and chairperson of its unit in Mozambique.

ExxonMobil Mozambique announced Boothey’s appointment in a social media post on Monday.

Boothey has over three decades of experience in the energy sector, with a strong track record of leadership across multiple regions and complex operations, according to ExxonMobil Mozambique.

Prior to this appointment, Johanna served as development manager for ExxonMobil Papua New Guinea (PNG), where she led the company’s expansion projects, helping to advance developments in the LNG sector.

In her new role, she will oversee ExxonMobil’s business in Mozambique, “guiding operations and strategic priorities while strengthening partnerships that support the country’s energy development and economic growth,” ExxonMobil Mozambique said.

“ExxonMobil welcomes Johanna to Mozambique and looks forward to her leadership in advancing the company’s mission to reach the final investment decision and advance the project while contributing to the Mozambique’s long-term development,” the company said.

ExxonMobil and its partners in the Rovuma LNG project in Mozambique are planning to take FID on the project in 2026, according to ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods.

Last year, ExxonMobil and its partners lifted force majeure on the project.

Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), which, besides ExxonMobil, includes Italy’s Eni and China’s CNPC, is developing the project.

MRV operates the deepwater Area 4 block in the Rovuma basin off Mozambique, which will feed the planned LNG export plant on the Afungi peninsula from the Mamba reservoirs.

The joint venture holds a 70 percent interest in the Area 4 exploration and production concession contract.

In addition to MRV, Galp, Kogas, and Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos each hold a 10 percent interest in Area 4.

ExxonMobil is leading the construction and operation of the liquefaction and related facilities on behalf of MRV, and Eni is leading the construction and operation of the upstream facilities.
