NFE said in a statement on Wednesday that the gas supply deal is for 20 years.
According to NFE, the power plant is located adjacent to its existing San Juan LNG import terminal.
The Energiza power plant will be the first power plant constructed in Puerto Rico since 1995 and is expected to commence operations in 2028, NFE said.
The firm did not provide any other details regarding the contract.
“The long-term partnership between Energiza and NFE will greatly benefit Puerto Rico and we’re excited to be part of this historic milestone,” said Wes Edens, chairman and CEO of NFE.
Moreover, this power plant will serve as a “much-needed cleaner, reliable, and efficient power source to enhance Puerto Rico’s aging power system,” Edens said.
NFE’s Puerto Rico ops
Last year, NFE sold two of its operating power plans to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, while it also secured a new gas supply contract from the latter.
The company sold the emergency power plants it constructed on behalf of the US Army Corps of Engineers in San Juan and Palo Seco to PREPA for $373 million in cash.7
As per the San Juan LNG import terminal, the facility was commissioned in April 2020.
According to NFE’s website, the LNG facility in the port of San Juan supplies natural gas to the San Juan combined cycle power plant.
The facility features the 2013-built 6,500-cbm LNG carrier, Coral Anthelia, owned by Anthony Veder.
NFE said the facility has multiple truck loading bays and is uniquely positioned to supply on-island industrial, commercial, and transportation customers with LNG.
Last year, NFE sent the third cargo from its FLNG project off Mexico’s Altamira to its operation in Puerto Rico.
The company’s first Fast LNG (FLNG) unit has a nameplate capacity of 1.4 mtpa.
