Teekay’s LNG carrier rescues sailor off Bermuda

Teekay LNG’s carrier has recently rescued a solo sailor in distress on a sailing vessel offshore Bermuda.

The 2017-built 170,000 cbm Torben Spirit recently received a distress alert from the US Coast Guard as the sailing vessel, MUJIAN, was without engine or electrical power.

The sailing vessel was drifting for a while some 220 miles south east of Bermuda.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the crew were quick to derive a rescue plan to bring the sailor onboard,” Teekay said in a statement.

Moreover, the sailor received medical assistance as a precaution and Torben Spirit proceeded towards Bermuda to disembark the stricken man before continuing its passage, the shipping firm said.

This marks the second rescue in the past year for Torben Spirit, who also provided MEDIVAC assistance to a Spanish-flagged fishing vessel off the coast of Namibia in July of 2020, Teekay said.

Torben Spirit’s AIS data shows that the vessel was on Wednesday located in the Philippine Sea but the carrier has visited Bermuda in December.

Worth mentioning here, Teekay’s LNG carrier Madrid Spirit has earlier this month managed to evade an attack by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea. The pirates even fired shots at the 135,423 cbm vessel, maritime security firms said.
