Adnoc places LNG carrier order at China’s Jiangnan

A unit of UAE’s Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (Adnoc) has ordered two large LNG carriers at China’s Jiangnan Shipyard, according to shipbuilding sources.

Under the deal, Jiangnan would build two 175,000-cbm LNG carriers for Adnoc Logistics & Services, two shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime on Wednesday.

The order also includes an option for two additional vessels, the sources said.

Besides WinGD dual-fuel engines, the vessels would feature GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane system, one source said.

Also, the price tag of the vessels was not revealed but the source said that Adnoc could pay about $200 million per ship.

Jiangnan would deliver the LNG carriers in the first half of 2025, according to the source.

First order for large LNG carriers

With this contract, the Chinese shipbuilder has received its first order for large LNG carriers.

Last year, the yard signed a letter of intent with CSSC Shipping, the financial leasing unit of its parent China State Shipbuilding Corporation, to build up to two large LNG vessels.

In December, Jiangnan started building a 79,800 cbm LNG carrier for compatriot energy firm Jovo, entering the mid-scale LNG carrier market.

On the other side, Adnoc Logistics & Services recently signed a second FSU deal with Singapore’s LNG firm AG&P.

As part of the deal, AG&P will lease the 1995-built, 137,315-cbm LNG carrier Ish from Adnoc Logistics & Services and convert it to an FSU.

Adnoc Logistics & Services currently owns eight LNG carriers built between 1994 and 1997.
