China Merchants yard delivers first LNG-powered PCTC to Japan’s NYK

China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing has delivered the first of four LNG-powered pure car and truck carriers to Japan’s NYK.

According to a statement by China Merchants Industry, the delivery ceremony for the LNG-powered PCTC, Jasmine Leader, took place on January 31.

This is the first vessel with a capacity of 7,000 units NYK ordered at the Chinese yard in February 2021.

According to data by VesselsValue, NYK will pay about $75 million per vessel.

NYK previously said it plans to use the 200 meters long PCTCs to transport vehicles mainly to/from Europe and/or to the Middle East.

The vessels feature WinGD’s 7X62DF-2.1 two-stroke engines coupled with shaft generators, DC-links, and battery systems.

NYK is positioning LNG fuel as one of the bridge solutions until future zero-emission ships are realized and plans to take delivery of a total of 20 new LNG-fueled car carriers by 2028.

It took delivery of Japan’s first LNG-powered PCTC, Sakura Leader, in October 2020, followed by its second PCTC, Plumeria Leader, in March last year.
