China Merchants yard delivers second LNG-powered PCTC to NYK

China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing has handed over the second of four LNG-fueled pure car and truck carriers to Japan’s NYK.

According to a statement, the delivery ceremony for the LNG-powered PCTC, Wild Rose Leader, took place on April 20.

This is the second vessel with a capacity of 7,000 units NYK ordered at the Chinese yard in February 2021.

China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing delivered the first vessel in this batch, Jasmine Leader, on January 31.

NYK previously said it plans to use the 200 meters long PCTCs to transport vehicles mainly to/from Europe and/or to the Middle East.

The vessels feature WinGD’s 7X62DF-2.1 two-stroke engines coupled with shaft generators, DC-links, and battery systems.

NYK is positioning LNG fuel as one of the bridge solutions until future zero-emission ships are realized and plans to take delivery of a total of 20 new LNG-fueled car carriers by 2028.

It took delivery of Japan’s first LNG-powered PCTC, Sakura Leader, in October 2020, followed by its second PCTC, Plumeria Leader, in March last year.
