Shell revealed this in its newest LNG Outlook on Tuesday.
However, the UK-based firm did not provide many details regarding the fleet.
Shell released a graph (below) showing that China’s LNG-powered truck fleet is expected to double between 2020 and 2030 as it replaces diesel with LNG.
The graph shows that the fleet reached nearly 1 million trucks last year.
Besides China, India is also working to expand its fleet of LNG-powered trucks.
Including the LNG-powered truck fleets of both countries, this market could consume nearly 30 million tonnes of LNG equivalent in 2030, according to Shell.
China is the world’s largest importer of LNG.
Shell said in the report China is significantly increasing its LNG import capacity and aims to add piped gas connections for 150 million people by 2030 to meet increasing demand.
Demand for LNG strengthened in Asia during the first half of 2024 as China took advantage of lower prices, importing 79 million tonnes during the year, it said.
India is also moving ahead with building natural gas infrastructure and adding gas connections to 30 million people over the next five years, it said.
Shell said India bought record volumes to help meet stronger power demand due to hotter weather in early summer.
Its imports rose to 27 million tonnes, a 20 percent increase from 2023.
