GTT confirms China Merchants order for LNG carrier quartet

French LNG containment giant GTT confirmed it has won its first LNG tank order from China Merchants Heavy Industry-Jiangsu.

GTT said in a statement on Tuesday it has secured the contract for four 180,000-cbm LNG carriers in the first quarter of 2023.

According to GTT, the tanks of these vessels will be fitted with the Mark III Flex membrane containment system.

China Merchants Heavy Industry-Jiangsu will deliver the LNG carriers to a European shipowner between the first quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, GTT said.

The Paris-based firm did not provide any addtional details regarding the order.

LNG Prime reported on December 30 that Denmark’s Celsius Tankers ordered four 180,000-cbm LNG carriers at the China Merchants yard.

Besides the Mark III Flex membrane containment system, the LNG carriers will feature MAN ME-GA engines.

This is the first LNG carrier order in China for Celsius Tankers and the first order for large LNG carriers for China Merchants Heavy Industry-Jiangsu.

The yard won a license from GTT in October last year to construct large LNG carriers using GTT membrane technologies.

With this order, the yard joined Hudong-Zhonghua, the main LNG carrier shipbuilder in China, as well as Jiangnan Shipyard, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC), and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in building large LNG carriers in China.
