HMM orders 12 LNG-ready containerships at Korean yards

South Korean shipping firm HMM said it has ordered 12 LNG-ready containerships at two compatriot yards.

The order has a price tag of about $1.57 billion, according to HMM.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and Hyundai Heavy Industries will each build six 13,000 TEU container vessels.

The Korean shipbuilders would deliver the LNG-ready vessels in the first half of 2024.

In addition, all of the LNG-ready ships would feature hybrid scrubber, HMM said.

HMM has already eight 16,000 TEU LNG-ready containerships on order at Hyundai Heavy.

The first vessel in this batch, HMM Nuri, started working earlier this year on the Far East Europe 4 (FE4) service, operated by The Alliance, a shipping consortium consisting of Hapag-Lloyd, ONE, Yang Ming, and HMM.

The Korean firm previously said it expects to take delivery of all of these ships by June this year.
