Last month, LNG Prime reported that Evergreen selected Samsung Heavy and China’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding to each build seven LNG dual-fuel vessels with a capacity of 14,000 teu following a tender.
However, it seems that SWS backed out of the order and GSI was selected to follow on Evergreen’s previous order for LNG dual-fuel container vessels, the sources said.
It remains unclear whether the final shipbuilding deals have been signed.
Several brokers, including Intermodal, also reported that Samsung Heavy will build seven LNG dual-fuel vessels for Evergreen and deliver them from 2028 to 2030.
GSI will deliver its seven vessels from 2028 to 2029.
Evergreen is expected to reportedly pay $200 million for each vessel or $2.8 billion for the entire order.
Earlier this year, Evergreen ordered 11 LNG dual-fuel containerships with a capacity of 24,000 teu from South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean and GSI.
Hanwha Ocean will build six vessels, while GSI will build five LNG dual-fuel vessels.
The six ultra-large LNG dual-fuel containerships at Hanwha Ocean are worth about $1.6 billion, or $266 million per ship.
Hanwha Ocean will deliver these ships by March 2028.
This was the first order for LNG dual-fuel vessels for Evergreen, which has mainly focused on ordering methanol-powered ships during the last few years.
