Samsung Heavy says wins order for five LNG-powered ULCVs

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries said Monday it won an order to build five LNG-powered ultra-large container vessels from an unidentified Asian owner.

The order for the 15,000 TEU quintet has a price tag of 781.2 billion won ($708 million), Samsung Heavy said in a stock exchange announcement.

In addition, the Korean yard said it would deliver the ships by July 2023, without revealing any further info.

Despite Samsung not revealing the owner, the deal most likely relates to last week’s announcement by Hong Kong-based Seaspan and Israel’s Zim.

Zim said it would charter ten LNG-powered ULCVs from Seaspan to serve its Asia-US East Coast trade.

Moreover, the duo said that Samsung would build the vessels.
