Wartsila wins more work for Stena’s LNG-powered ferries

Finland’s Wartsila said it has won another contract to supply equipment for three Stena RoRo’s LNG-fueled vessels under construction in China.

The tech firm said earlier this year it would supply a broad scope of solutions, including LNG dual-fuel engines and propulsion machinery for the three vessels.

French shipping firm Brittany Ferries signed a deal last year with Stena RoRo for two of these LNG-powered ferries while Canada’s Marine Atlantic will charter one vessel.

Under the new contract won in May this year, Wartsila will supply its hybrid propulsion system for the vessels.

Two of the ferries will have a battery capacity of 11.5 MWh, making them the marine industry’s largest hybrid vessels to date, according to a Wartsila statement on Tuesday.

This battery power is about double that typically being used currently for hybrid propulsion, it said.

All of the ships will have the capability of operating with either LNG fuel or batteries.

They will feature the latest generation Leclanche energy storage system – the Navius MRS-3 – which has both a size and weight advantage versus comparable marine batteries, Wartsila said.

Warstila did not reveal the price tag of the deal.

China Merchants Jinling in Weihai will deliver these ferries in 2024 and 2025.
