Air Products wins contract for Nigeria LNG’s seventh train

US tech and equipment firm Air Products said it has secured a contract to supply heat exchangers for Nigeria LNG’s seventh production unit at its Bonny Island plant.

A joint venture led by Italy’s Saipem has awarded the contract to Air Products.

To remind, SCD JV, which includes Chiyoda and Daewoo E&C, secured a $4 billion engineering, procurement and construction deal for the new train in May last year.

Nigeria LNG, the operator of the 22 mtpa Bonny Island plant, held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the construction start on the seventh 8 mtpa production unit in June this year.

The project includes one complete LNG train and one combined liquefaction unit.

Air Products said in a statement on Monday it would provide the main cryogenic heat exchangers (MCHEs) and the process technology for both liquefaction units. It would deliver the equipment in 2023.

Moreover, Air Products said it would build the new LNG heat exchangers at its Port Manatee, Florida manufacturing facility.

Typically, an LNG heat exchanger can be as large as over 5 meters in diameter and 55 meters long. A finished unit can weigh as much as 500 tons, Air Products said.

The US firm previously provided the MCHEs and process technology for the first six trains for NLNG at Bonny Island with initial onstream production from the units beginning in 1999 for the first, to 2007 for the sixth. All six LNG trains continue production today.
