Greece-based downstream LNG firm Blue Grid said it would supply liquefied natural gas to compatriot EL PACK Group’s Fthiotis Paper Mills as the latter switches to cleaner fuel for thermal power generation.
Fthiotis Paper Mills will replace fuel oil with LNG for thermal generation in order to slash costs and emissions.
With the move, the paper mill located in Damasta, Lamia, would become the first-ever industrial consumer in Greece to switch to LNG, according to Blue Grid.
Founded in 1974, Fthiotis Paper Mills is the largest industrial production unit of recycled packaging paper in Greece, according to EL PACK.
Blue Grid said it would deliver LNG to the paper production facilities via semi-trailers, which will first load the fuel at DESFA’s truck-loading facility currently under construction at the Revithoussa LNG terminal. DESFA previously said it plans to complete the facility by the end of this year.
Besides supplying LNG to consumers in manufacturing and shipping, Blue Grid has earlier this year also joined forces with one of the largest fuel retailers in Greece, Elinoil.
The two firms have teamed up to create BlueFuel, the country’s first LNG fuel supplier for road transport.
The 50/50 joint venture will develop a nationwide network of filling stations for heavy-duty vehicles, enabling the use of LNG as a road fuel in Greece but also the wider region, the duo previously said.
