GTT, HD Hyundai Heavy to advance LNG carrier design

French LNG containment firm GTT signed two joint development projects with South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, aimed at advancing the design of LNG carriers.

According to a statement by GTT, this new collaboration is paving the way for optimized membrane-tank integration to enhance onboard ergonomics and vessels’ operational performance.

The two JDPs will focus on two areas.

This includes a convergent trapezoidal cargo tank No. 11.

GTT stated that this is a forward tank concept featuring a convergent trapezoidal form for LNG carriers, equipped with GTT’s Mark III membrane system.

“This pioneering geometry will allow a superior adjustment to the hull compared with conventional constant section tanks, thus optimising cargo capacity,” GTT said.

Moreover, the duo will work on a flush deck liquid dome design.

GTT said this flush deck liquid dome is located at the interface between the membrane tank and the cryogenic piping.

This concept improves trunk-deck ergonomics, simplifies on-board piping, and facilitates maintenance, GTT claims.

Besides these JDPs , GTT just received approvals from classification society BV for its new cargo containment systems developed for ethane transport.

The company also received AiP from classification society DNV for its membrane tank design rated for 1 barg, suitable for LNG dual-fuel vessels.

GTT received orders for nine LNG carriers, seven very large ethane carriers, and 12 LNG-powered containerships in the first quarter.
