GTT scores tank order for 4 VLECs

France’s GTT said Monday it secured an order to design tanks for four very large ethane carriers.

The LNG containment specialist did not reveal the name of the owner only saying it remains confidential at this stage.

Korean shipyards Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries will each build two 98,000-cbm VLECs.

Under the deal, GTT will design the tanks, which will be fitted with the Mark III membrane containment system.

The vessels will be able to transport ethane as well as several other types of gas, such as propylene, LPG and ethylene.

Additionally, the cargo tanks will benefit from the “LNG cargo ready” notation, thus offering the possibility to carry LNG in the future, according to GTT.

To remind, GTT also won last year a similar order from the two yards for six Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical’s VLECs.

The delivery of the new quartet is scheduled for the second quarter of 2022.
