Hyundai Heavy to build LNG carrier trio worth about $783 million

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries has won a contract to build three liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers worth about $783 million.

Parent KSOE said on Tuesday HHI would build the 200,000-cbm LNG carriers for an unidentified owner in Oceania and deliver them by November 2026.

According to KSOE, the contract has a price tag of 971.4 billion won ($783 million) or $261 million per vessel, which is a record price.

The LNG carriers would be 299.8 meters long and 48.9 meters wide.

This is the first LNG carrier order for KSOE and its units for 2023.

It is also the first order for large LNG carriers in 2023 announced by any Korean or Chinese shipyard.

Dynagas ordered the LNG carriers?

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that Greece’s Dynagas is likely behind this order for the three LNG carriers.

Dynagas also ordered four 200,000-cbm LNG carriers at Hyundai Heavy in 2021 and three 200,000-cbm vessels last year.

The three vessels ordered in March last year are each worth about $234 million, some $27 million less compared to this newest order.
