Kogas unit inks Korean LNG bunkering deal

Korea LNG Bunkering, a unit of Kogas, said it has signed a deal to supply liquefied natural gas to H-Line Shipping’s vessel in South Korea.

According to a statement on Wednesday, Korea LNG Bunkering would supply some 2,200 cbm or 1,000 tons of LNG during one bunkering operation to H-Line’s iron ore carrier.

Korea LNG Bunkering said this marks the first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering contract in Korea.

The supplies would start at the end of June in Mokpo and the firm would use the 7,500-cbm SM Jeju LNG2 bunkering vessel for the operations, the statement said.

It said that the carrier transports iron ore from Australia to South Korea, but it did not reveal additional information.

H-Line previously chartered two LNG-powered bulkers to Posco and two to Hyundai Steel.

Founded by Kogas in 2020, Korea LNG Bunkering is the only firm providing ship-to-ship LNG bunkering services in South Korea.

In February last year, the company ordered its first newbuild LNG bunkering vessel at compatriot Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The 7,500-cbm vessel will join its fleet in 2023, adding to SM Jeju LNG2, Korea’s first LNG bunkering vessel which Kogas chartered from Korea Line.

Kogas previously said it aims to supply 1.36 million tons of LNG for ships by 2030 as owners increasingly opt for the fuel to meet tighter regulations and slash emissions.
