Kongsberg secures contract for Golar’s FLNG conversion

Norway’s Kongsberg Maritime has secured a “substantial” contract to provide an integrated package of electrical, control, safety, and propulsion systems for the Golar Mk2 floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project.

Kongsberg said in a statement the contract is valued at more than $25 million.

This contract will see Kongsberg technology form a “key” part of the new onboard systems for a major rebuild project in which Golar’s LNG tanker, Fuji LNG, will be lengthened by nearly 100 meters and converted to an FLNG vessel, the firm said.

Golar recently signed an EPC agreement with China’s CIMC Raffles to convert its 148,000-cbm Moss-type carrier, Fuji LNG, into an MKII FLNG with a capacity of 3.5 mtpa.

Also, Black & Veatch will supply the topside LNG process plant.

Golar said the total EPC price is $1.6 billion, but the total budget for the MK II FLNG conversion is $2.2 billion.

The Golar MK II design is an evolution of the MK I design of FLNG Hilli and FLNG Gimi.

Kongsberg’s equipment package for the Golar Mk2 FLNG features two UUC305 azimuth thrusters, electrical systems, as well as an integrated control and safety system (ICSS).

Notably, the thrusters will be equipped with a heading control system, leveraging Kongsberg’s expertise in dynamic positioning (DP) without requiring full DP capabilities for the FLNG.

The ICSS provided by Kongsberg ensures the safe and efficient operation of the FLNG unit.

Kongsberg said it integrates control of the process plant, energy management, power distribution, cargo handling, ballast control, and auxiliary systems.
