MT Group bags contract for German LNG terminal

Lithuanian EPC contractor MT Group has secured a contract for the German government-backed onshore LNG import terminal in Brunsbuttel.

MT Group announced on Tuesday that it has been awarded a “major” construction contract by the Cobra IS / Sener consortium to implement balance-of-plant infrastructure at the LNG terminal.

The group did not provide the contract pricing details.

MT Group said that project completion is scheduled for 2027.

The company noted that the award represents one of its largest projects in Germany to date and further strengthens the company’s position in one of Europe’s “most important energy infrastructure markets.”

In 2024, MT Group signed a deal with Gasfin Development to build a heater facility at DET’s FSRU-based LNG import terminal in Brunsbuttel.

During the same year, Gasunie and RWE made the final investment decision on the onshore LNG import terminal in Brunsbüttel.

Before the decision, the JV also kicked off preparatory activities, including site installation and fencing, earthworks to consolidate and drain the land areas, and construction of roads and access routes.

Cobra IS, a unit of French construction company Vinci and Spanish engineering firm Sener won the EPC contract.

Gasunie holds a 40 percent operating stake in the facility, RWE has a 10 percent stake, while the German government, through KfW, holds a 50 percent stake.

Once in operation, the new land-based LNG terminal will replace the current FSRU-based facility.

The terminal is expected to regasify and feed some 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas into the German grid.

US energy giant ConocoPhillips, UK’s Ineos, and RWE have previously agreed to book long-term capacity at the onshore LNG import facility.
