Lithuania’s MT Group said it has secured a contract from Belgium’s Fluxys to work on expanding the Zeebrugge LNG terminal’s capacity.
MT Group said the contract with Fluxys LNG, a unit of Fluxys, has a price tag of 14 million euros ($15.9 million).
The project aims to expand the operational volume of the Zeebrugge LNG terminal while significantly reducing the facility’s environmental footprint, it said.
Earlier this year, Fluxys took a final investment decision to almost double the regasification capacity at the LNG terminal following a successful open season.
The Zeebrugge terminal currently consists of five tanks with a storage capacity of 566,000 cbm and a regasification capacity of about 6.6 mtpa.
In addition, Sacyr Fluor, a unit of Spanish construction firm Sacyr, also secured a contract earlier this year from Fluxys related to capacity expansion at the latter’s Zeebrugge terminal.
Preparatory works underway
MT Group said the general contractor’s agreement concluded at the end of this year would not only allow for a significant increase in the regasification capacity of the facility but also significantly abate greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants.
According to the firm, complex technological works would last until mid-2023 while preparatory works “are well underway.”
It expects onsite works to start in February 2022.
„The tender was carried out with the quality, safety, and environmental criteria of the works as the key evaluation criteria and only 35 percent of the evaluation focusing on the final price of the services,” Simonas Kunickas, MT Group’s general manager, said.
“We were able to compete and win against solid competitors, well known internationally in the energy sector, and now have an opportunity to contribute to the energy infrastructure development and modernization project of high importance for the whole Europe,” he said.
