Novatek in first China LNG ISO container delivery

Russian independent Novatek has completed its first trial delivery of LNG shipped in ISO containers to the world’s largest energy consumer China.

Novatek said in a statement it wrapped up the shipment together with Japan’s Saibu Gas for delivery to China’s Tiger Gas under a spot contract.

Furthermore, the duo delivered the shipment by sea in Tiger Gas-owned ISO containers from the Japanese Hibiki container terminal to Shanghai.

“Together with our partners, we have successfully completed our first trial delivery of LNG in ISO containers to China,” Novatek deputy chairman Lev Feodosyev said.

“It is forecasted that ISO containers of LNG will exponentially increase over the upcoming decades, allowing us to diversify our customer base by including small-scale LNG consumers and entering the downstream markets in China and Japan,” he said.

Novatek’s only operational large project, not including the small-scale Vysotsk plant, is the 17.4 mtpa Yamal LNG plant in the Russian Arctic.

The project includes three 5.5 mtpa LNG trains and one unit with a capacity of 900,000 tons per year.

Additionally, the Russian producer plans to reach a total of up to 70 mtpa of LNG production capacity by 2030 and has lined up several new developments.

These include the company’s second Arctic LNG project with a 6.6 mtpa capacity and the planned Obskiy development.

The second Arctic LNG project is about 30 percent complete with a targeted launch of the first train in 2023.
