Qatar Petroleum inks deal with Vitol for Bangladesh LNG supply

State-owned LNG giant Qatar Petroleum has entered into a deal with trader Vitol to supply liquefied natural gas to Bangladesh.

QP said on Monday it would supply 1.25 million tons per annum of LNG to Vitol’s final customers in Bangladesh but it did not reveal any further information.

Under the agreement, LNG deliveries will start later this year, “further demonstrating Qatar’s continued commitment to meeting the growing needs of its customers for reliable LNG supplies,” the firm said.

Bangladesh imports LNG via two Excelerate Energy’s FSRUs but the government has sights on more import facilities as the country continues to boost LNG imports.

Vitol has already supplied spot LNG cargoes to Bangladesh while Qatar Petroleum’s unit Qatargas has a long-term contract to deliver the fuel to the country.

Moreover, the new deal comes just two weeks after QP’s final investment decision and the contract awards for its giant LNG expansion project.

The EPC award is part of the North Field East project and Chiyoda and Technip will build four “mega trains” with a capacity of 8 million tonnes per year in the Ras Laffan complex.

This first phase of the expansion project will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 to 110 mtpa.

Qatargas already operates six LNG trains at Ras Laffan.
