Samsung Heavy nets order for LNG carrier quartet

South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries will build four new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers as part of a new deal revealed on Wednesday.

Samsung Heavy said the contract has a price tag of 998.5 billion won ($837.3 million).

Also, the yard said it would build the LNG carriers for an owner based in Africa.

Samsung Heavy added it would deliver the ships by September 2025, but it did not reveal any additional information regarding the contract.

This marks the first order for the shipbuilder in 2022 that has set an order target of $8.8 billion this year.

In 2021, Samsung won orders worth $12.2 billion, surpassing its annual target of $9.1 billion by about $3.1 billion. This included orders for 22 LNG carriers.

One shipbuilding source told LNG Prime that US energy giant ExxonMobil could be behind this order at Samsung Heavy. The firm probably chartered these ships.

Compatriot Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries also recently won an order to build two new LNG carriers for an unidentified African shipowner.

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that Nigeria LNG, the operator of the 22 mtpa Bonny Island plant, was involved in this deal but they did not order the vessels directly.

Nigeria’s Bono Energy booked these two vessels, according to the sources.
