Samsung Heavy to build LNG carrier trio

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries will build three new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers as part of a deal revealed on Tuesday.

Samsung Heavy said in a statement the contract has a price tag of 733.9 billion won ($622 million).

The yard said it would build two LNG carriers for a Bermuda-based shipping firm and one LNG tanker for an Oceania-based company.

Samsung Heavy added it would deliver the ships by January 2025, but it did not reveal any additional information regarding the contract.

Including the newest deal, the shipbuilder won orders worth $11.8 billion so far this year, surpassing its annual target of $9.1 billion. This includes orders for 20 LNG carriers.

One shipbuilding source told LNG Prime that J.P. Morgan could be behind the order for two LNG carriers out of these three new vessels.

Samsung Heavy recently won an order for four LNG carriers. Global Meridian Holdings, part of J.P. Morgan Asset Management, placed the order for these LNG carriers, brokers previously said.

It also won an order for four LNG carriers that will serve Novatek’s Arctic LNG projects.

Sovcomflot and NYK ordered these 174,000-cbm LNG carriers and signed long-term charter deals with Novatek.
