South Korea’s Samsung Heavy to build LNG carrier quartet

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries will build four new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers as part of a deal revealed on Thursday.

Samsung Heavy said in a stock exchange filing it would build the vessels for Asian owners.

Moreover, the contract has a price tag of 959.3 billion won ($809.2 million), the shipbuilder said.

The yard added it would deliver the ships by February 2024, but it did not reveal any additional information regarding the contract.

Including the newest contract, the shipbuilder won orders worth $8.6 billion so far this year for 64 ships, reaching 95 percent of its annual target.

One shipbuilding source told LNG Prime that these vessels could be linked to the Novatek-operated Arctic 2 LNG project in Russia.

Samsung Heavy recently confirmed it was in talks to build four plus two ice-classed 174,000-cbm LNG carriers which would serve the project.

The owners include Russia’s Sovcomflot and Japan’s NYK Line, according to the source.

DSME also recently won an order from Japan’s MOL for four 174,000-cbm LNG carriers which will go on charter to Novatek.

Samsung Heavy has this month revealed an order for six LNG-powered container vessels. France’s CMA CGM ordered these six 7,600 TEU vessels. Prior to that, the yard won an order for two LNG carriers as well.
