Deltamarin reveals new LNG-powered containership design

Finland-based Deltamarin, a part of China Merchants Group, has introduced a new LNG-powered Kielmax containership design.

The C.Delta series, C.Delta2100, includes ice-class 1A for Baltic Sea operation, but would also feature lashing bridges to access reefer containers, according to the ship designer.

The design provides a container capacity of 2,100 TEU in four cargo holds and on deck.

“The daily main-engine fuel oil consumption using LNG (tier III) 30.8 t/day + pilot oil 0.8 t/day at a 18-knot service speed results in superior fuel efficiency of less than 0.015t LNG/TEU/day at design draft,” the firm said.

With this, it achieves a low deadweight per TEU ratio of about 15.2 DWT/14t TEU. According to Deltamarin, mostly larger containerships achieve this ratio.

In addition, the design features two LNG tanks with a capacity of 480 cbm, each, but also MAN ME-GI propulsion or equivalent.

Moreover, the design complies with EEDI Phase 3 and provides a “flexible platform” for a whole series of other designs. Deltamarin says the design could be adapted to various customers’ requirements as it completed several optional feature studies.

The platform design is “future-proof”, taking into consideration possibilities to use alternative fuels to reduce carbon footprint or even zero-emission power production, it said.
