In 2024, total natural gas consumption amounted to 311.7 TWh, Enagas said on Thursday.
The decrease is mainly due to lower gas demand for power generation.
Specifically, gas demand for electricity generation stood at 74.7 TWh, a 22 percent decrease, Engagas said.
Conventional demand in private households, businesses, and industry totaled 237 TWh in 2024, with the increase largely due to a 4.2 percent rise in industrial consumption, which reached 176.7 TWh.
Enagas operates a large network of gas pipelines in Spain and has three wholly-owned LNG import plants in Barcelona, Huelva, and Cartagena.
It also owns 75 percent of the Musel LNG facility, 50 percent of the BBG regasification plant in Bilbao, and 72.5 percent of the Sagunto plant, while Reganosa operates the Mugardos plant.
Supplies to Europe, LNG bunkering
According to Enagas, Spain contributed to the security of supply of the rest of Europe by supplying a total of 34.5 TWh of natural gas, both through interconnections and LNG reloads.
The loading operations complied with the European Union’s 14th package of sanctions against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, Enagas said.
The firm said that Spain is the first EU country to define the detailed rules and procedures for the monitoring, control, and authorization of ship loadings carried out in the Spanish gas system in order to ensure that the loaded LNG does not originate from Russia.
In 2024, the Spanish gas system received gas from 14 different origins, contributing to a broad diversification of supply and positioning Spain as a strategic entry point for LNG from Europe, Enagas said.
Likewise, LNG terminals carried out more than twice as many LNG bunkering loadings in 2024 (3.8 TWh) than in 2023 (1.5 TWh), thus contributing to the decarbonization of the maritime sector, according to Enagas.
Natural gas fill levels in underground storage facilities ended the year above 80 percent – after reaching 100 perccent filling in August.
“In a European energy environment marked by the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, the Spanish gas system has operated 24 hours a day, every day of the year with 100 percent availability, demonstrating great robustness and flexibility,” Enagas said.
