LR announced the approval in principle for the LNG carrier design in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the classification society, this innovation challenges traditional LNG carrier design norms, highlighting the importance of speed in reducing emissions and paving the way for sustainable LNG shipping solutions.
The 200,000-cbm LNG carrier design offers “significant” environmental and economic advantages.
These include about 27 percent reduction in voyage-based emissions intensity and a decrease in unit freight cost (UFC) by up to 5.5 percent by 2025 and 14 percent by 2050 under frameworks like EU ETS and FuelEU, LR said.
LR conducted a thorough evaluation of the cargo tank design against class standards and IGC Code requirements, ensuring the integrity of the three-tank structure under increased sloshing loads.
The assessment extended to various GTT containment systems – Mark III Flex, Mark III Flex+, NO96 Super+, and GTT Next1, it said.
Jean-Baptiste Choimet, CEO of GTT said this AiP from LR is a “major milestone” for GTT and the LNG industry.
“Our three-tank design represents a significant leap forward in terms of efficiency and sustainability,” he said.
Back in October 2022, GTT secured approvals from DNV and BV for its three-tank LNG tanker design.
DNV and BV issued approvals for the Mark III and NO96 technologies developed by GTT.
GTT booked tank design orders for 68 LNG carriers in January-September of this year.
The company received orders for 73 LNG carriers last year, down from record 162 orders for LNG carriers in 2022 and higher than 68 orders in 2021.
