GTT, TotalEnergies get BV OK for large LH2 carrier

French LNG containment giant GTT, compatriot TotalEnergies, one of the world’s largest LNG players, and Norway-based ship designer LMG Marin have received an approval in principle from classification society Bureau Veritas for their 150,000-cbm liquefied hydrogen (LH2) carrier concept.

In April 2023, the four firms signed a deal for a joint development project (JDP) to develop the LH2 carrier fitted with GTT’s membrane-type containment system.

According to a GTT statement issued on Wednesday, BV now has approved the preliminary design for the large-scale LH2 carrier.

BV also approved the design of a cryogenic membrane containment system for LH2 developed by GTT.

GTT said this collaboration testifies to the “exceptional synergy between key players in French industry to meet the challenges of hydrogen shipping on a global scale” and each member has contributed specific expertise to the project.

“Alongside TotalEnergies, LMG Marin, and Bureau Veritas, we are proud to have met this ambitious technological and environmental challenge for the maritime transport of liquefied hydrogen,” GTT’s chief Philippe Berterottière said.

He said that GTT’s ability to design a “breakthrough technology suitable for large vessels is a major step forward for the development of the hydrogen industry.”
