Portugal’s Sines LNG import terminal hits delivery record in 2022

The Sines LNG import terminal in Portugal has reached new yearly records in 2022, both in the number of received ships and in volumes, according to Portugal’s power and gas firm and operator of the LNG terminal, REN.

Over the year, the Sines LNG terminal unloaded 71 carriers, REN said in a statement, adding that all of these gas supplies were allocated for domestic gas consumption.

The previous record dated back to 2019, with 67 received ships, including two cool-down operations.

Moreover, the values of received energy also reached an all-time high of 63.33 TWh, surpassing the previous record, also from 2019, according to REN.

Each LNG carrier delivers about 145,000 cbm of LNG in Sines, enough to supply Portugal for a week, the firm said.

The LNG terminal is located in the industrial area of the Sines port, on the Portuguese Atlantic coast.

It has three LNG storage tanks with a total capacity of 390,000 cbm and a regasification capacity of 5.6 mtpa.

REN Atlantico operates the Sines LNG terminal which receives the fuel and stores it in the facility’s tanks for later regasification and injection into the transmission network.

Also, the company is responsible for the high-pressure transmission of natural gas and for the overall technical management of the national natural gas system under concession contracts signed with the Portuguese government until 2046.

European LNG terminals such as Gate in the Dutch Rotterdam port and Grain LNG in the UK also received record number of deliveries last year on the back of a high demand as countries in Europe look to replace Russian gas pipeline supplies.

Portugal’s neighbor Spain has also boosted its LNG imports as well as the number of reloads due to a high demand in Europe.
