Remontowa clinches contract to build three Polish LNG ferries

Poland’s Remontowa has secured a contract to build three LNG-powered RoPax ferries for compatriot Polskie Promy, a unit of state-owned Polska Zegluga Morska.

Besides three firm vessels ordered from Remontowa Shiprepair Yard in Gdansk, the contract also includes an option for a fourth vessel.

Two of the LNG-powered vessels would work for Unity Line, a unit of Polska Zegluga Morska, while the third and the fourth optional vessel would sail for Polferries, the latter said on Friday.

The ferries would feature LNG dual-fuel engines and a battery pack.

Moreover, the 195.6 meters long hybrid ships would have a capacity for 4,100 lane meters of freight and 400 passengers.

According to local media reports, the government would invest about 1 billion Zlotys ($240 million) in the project which could be worth up to $960 million. The yard should deliver the first ferry in 2024.

Remontowa has a vast experience in building LNG-powered ships for several owners.

This includes LNG-powered ships built for Canada’s BC Ferries but also LNG-fueled PSVs for Borealis Maritime and Sweden’s Viking Supply Ships.
