Europe’s largest bunkering port and home of the Gate LNG import terminal reported LNG bunkering volumes of 941,366 cubic meters.
“It was notable that the demand for LNG in 2024 rebounded to previous levels after a decline during the period of inflated gas prices,” the Rotterdam port said in a statement.
In 2023, Rotterdam LNG bunkering volumes reached a record of 619,243 cbm as prices dropped from 2022 and demand continued to increase.
As per the fourth quarter of 2024, volumes reached 263,068 cbm, hitting a new quarterly record for LNG bunkering volumes.
Fourth-quarter volumes increased 76.6 percent from 148,933 cbm in the same quarter in 2023.
In 2024, the global LNG-powered fleet continued to increase
DNV’s latest data shows that orders for LNG-powered vessels jumped 103 percent to 264 ships last year, according to classification society DNV.
The orders for 264 LNG-powered ships compare to 130 LNG-powered vessels in 2023 and 222 LNG-powered vessels in 2022.
DNV said that the number of LNG-fueled ships in operation doubled between 2021 and 2024, with a record number of deliveries (169) in 2024.
By the end of 2024, 641 LNG-powered ships were in operation.
According to the AFI orderbook, this number is expected to double by the end of the decade.
