Stena Bulk sells its last LNG carrier

Swedish shipping firm Stena Bulk has sold its last liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier to an undisclosed Asian buyer.

The sale of the 2006-built steam LNG carrier, Stena Blue Sky, follows the recent announcement that Stena Bulk had sold two TFDE LNG carriers to Oslo-based BW LNG, a unit of Singapore’s gas shipping giant BW.

Originally built by DSME, now Hanwha Ocean, in South Korea, Stena Blue Sky has a carrying capacity of 145,000 cbm of LNG.

Stena Bulk did not reveal the name of the buyer or the price tag of the sale.

VesselsValue data suggests that the LNG carrier, now named Blue Dragon 1, is currently worth about $62 million.

According to Stena Bulk, it has delivered the LNG carrier to the new owner on April 18 in Singapore.

Stena Power & LNG Solutions

Stena Bulk entered the LNG market in May 2011 by buying three LNG carriers from TMT Taiwan.

In addition to the LNG vessels, Stena Bulk also owns Stena Power & LNG Solutions, a company that offers jettyless solutions for LNG, ammonia, CO2, and gas-to-power.

Stena Power & LNG Solutions is currently working on developing regasification/import terminals for LNG, as well as import and export terminals for ammonia and gas-to-power solutions that involve onshore distribution of LNG.

“As part of an ongoing sales process, Stena Bulk and Stena Power & LNG Solutions are actively maintaining dialogues with several interested parties regarding a potential straight sale of the business unit, or co-investment in its future,” Stena Bulk said.
