Furetank places order for another LNG-powered tanker in China

Swedish shipowner Furetank said it has ordered another LNG-powered tanker at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou.

Following delivery in July 2024, the 17,999-dwt dual-fuel tanker would become the eleventh in the Vinga series, Furetank said in a statement on Tuesday.

The new deal also includes an option for further vessels.

Prior to this order, Erik Thun ordered the tenth Vinga vessel in March and Furetank placed the order for the ninth ship in January.

Furetank already owns four and commercially operates all of eight FKAB-designed ice-class product and chemical tankers under Sweden’s Gothia Tanker Alliance.

The firm took delivery of the last ship in this series of eight, Fure Viten, in June 2021.

All of these 149 meters long and 22.8 meters wide vessels can run on LNG or LBG and have battery backup as well.

Furetank said the new ship would also be fully equipped to operate cargo pumps with 6.6 kV high voltage shore power to reduce emissions even further as soon as ports offer the opportunity.

It has a cargo capacity of 20,306 cubic meters in 12 epoxy coated cargo tanks, ice-class 1A and an “efficient” cargo handling system.

Furetank did not reveal the price tag of the order.

“Furetank’s ambition is to be the leading actor within the segment, offering our customers efficient and environmental friendly transportation,” Lars Höglund, CEO of Furetank, said.

“With a large fleet we can offer good service and at the same time optimize the trading pattern to increase utilization the vessels,” he said.
