Japan’s MOL orders LNG-powered bulker

Japan’s shipping giant MOL has ordered one LNG-powered bulk carrier at compatriot Oshima Shipbuilding on the back of a charter deal with Kansai Electric Power.

MOL revealed this in a statement issued on Thursday saying that it has signed a basic agreement with Kepco.

According to MOL, the LNG dual-fuel bulk carrier will transport coal from overseas to Kepco’s power station.

The vessel will be engaged in overseas coal transportation for the Maizuru power station in addition to an ongoing contract, and is slated for delivery in the second half of 2026, MOL said.

MOL did not provide price tag of the contract with Oshima Shipbuilding.

It said that the vessel will be about 235 meters long, 38 meters wide, and will have a deadweight tonnage of about 94,900 tons.

MOL Group has already ordered and built LNG-fueled car carriers, bulk carriers, tankers, ferries, and a tugboat, and this newbuilding bulk carrier will be its 17th LNG-fueled ocean-going vessel, it said.

The group said it will further expand the introduction of LNG-fueled vessels as an initiative that can be taken immediately, and accelerate its efforts to reduce total GHG emissions.
