Japan’s NYK places order for LNG-powered bulkers

Japan’s shipping giant NYK said it has decided to order four LNG-powered capesize bulk carriers at shipyards in Japan and China.

According to a statement by NYK on Friday, Nihon Shipyard will build two bulkers while Namura Shipbuilding will construct one LNG-powered vessel.

China’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a unit of CSSC, also won a contract from NYK for one ship.

NYK said it would take delivery of the LNG-powered bulk carriers sequentially from 2024 to 2025.

It did not reveal the value of the deal.

The firm is investing heavily in LNG-powered vessels as it looks to cut emissions and comply with more stringent IMO rules.

Last year, NYK signed a charter deal for its first LNG-powered bulk carrier with Japanese steel manufacturer JFE Steel.

It also confirmed plans to order twelve LNG-fueled PCTCs at two Japanese yards. NYK took delivery of Japan’s first LNG-powered PCTC, Sakura Leader, in October 2020.
