Jiangnan launches PIL’s LNG-fueled containership

China’s Jiangnan Shipyard has launched another LNG-powered containership for Singapore’s Pacific International Lines.

Jiangnan floated out Kota Embun on Monday.

This is the last of four PIL’s LNG dual-fuel containerships with a capacity of 14,000 teu, according to the shipbuilder.

In 2022, PIL ordered four 14,000-teu LNG dual-fuel containerships at Jiangnan with deliveries scheduled from the second quarter of 2024 through to the first half of 2025.

The “Kun” series developed by Jiangnan will also be ammonia-ready.

In October, PIL named its first two LNG-powered container vessels in a ceremony at Jiangnan.

PIL named the first vessel Kota Eagle and the second vessel Kota Emerald.

These are the largest vessels in PIL’s fleet and also the first to run on LNG.

The vessels are 335 meters long and 51 meters wide.

They feature GTT’s Mark III LNG containment system, an optimized hull form, and variable-frequency drive motors.

In addition to these four vessels, PIL has four 8,000 teu vessels on order at China’s Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.

Most recently, PIL booked five LNG dual-fuel containerships with a capacity of 14,000 teu at China’s Hudong-Zhonghua, adding to the previously ordered five LNG dual-fuel containerships with a capacity of 13,000 teu at the yard.

This order brings the company’s newbuild vessels ordered since 2022 to 18.
