Meyer Werft to build LNG-powered luxury residential yacht

Germany’s Meyer Werft said it has won a contract from Ocean Residences Development to build an LNG-powered luxury residential yacht.

The order for the 289.30 meters long yacht is still subject to financing, according to a Meyer Werft statement.

Meyer Werft says the residential yacht named Njord would have 117 luxury apartments and a dimension of 84,800 GT. It can accommodate about 1000 people including crew, it said.

Furthermore, the yard should deliver the LNG-powered vessel to Ocean Residences Development (ORD) by the end of 2025.

Kristian Stensby, a Norwegian-American entrepreneur and businessman, leads ORD.

The ship has a “special mega-yacht design and features low-emission LNG propulsion, which together with a hybrid battery system provides a speed of 21 knots,” the German yard said.

Moreover, to future-proof the vessel, Meyer Werft says the engines and fuel tanks would be prepared for easy conversion to future fuels with lower or carbon-neutral footprints.

Unlike the classic cruise ships, prospective buyers here will buy the suites or apartments on board. This underlines the character of a private yacht, Meyer Werft said.

“The ship has a purpose and goal to become home to a community of individuals and families who share a passion for travel, adventure and discovery – across oceans, underwater, in the air and on land,” it said.
