MSC Cruises names its second LNG-powered giant in Copenhagen

Switzerland-based cruise operator MSC Cruises held a naming ceremony for its second LNG-powered cruise vessel, MSC Euribia, in the Danish capital Copenhagen on June 8.

During its maiden voyage from Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France to Copenhagen, the 331 meters long vessel ran on bio-LNG supplied by Gasum.

MSC Cruises, a unit of shipping giant MSC, says this is the industry’s first cruise with net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

MSC Euribia begins sailing in Northern Europe this summer with 7-night sailings from Kiel, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark to the captivating Norwegian Fjords, including Geiranger, Alesund, and Flaam, it said.

This is the 22 vessel in the MSC Cruises fleet, standing 19 decks high, with 2,419 cabins and boasting 37,6736 square feet of public space. It can welcome 6,334 passengers.

The vessel features four Wartsila dual-fuel engines, including two 16V46DF and two 12V46DF engines.

They are capable of running on LNG and on low-sulphur marine gasoil.

France’s Chantiers de l’Atlantique launched this LNG-powered ship in June last year, and it delivered MSC Cruises’ first LNG-powered vessel, MSC World Europa, in October the same year.

The shipbuilder recently also held a coin ceremony for the third LNG-powered ship, MSC World America.
