Shell puts Gibraltar on global LNG bunkering map as it completes 1st op

Shell has completed the first LNG bunkering operation in Gibraltar after it secured a licence from the British overseas territory’s port operator.

The energy giant said on Thursday it recently bunkered Sovomcoflot’s Aframax tanker Lomonosov Prospect with Coral Methane in the Port of Gibraltar. Shell charters the 7,500-cbm LNG bunkering ship from Anthony Veder.

Sovcomflot and Shell also recently joined forces for the first LNG bunkering operation of an Aframax tanker in the US as the Hague-based firm continues to expand its fueling business.

Shell plans to boost its LNG bunkering business by 50 percent on international routes by the mid-2020s.

Gibraltar is an important addition to Shell’s portfolio as it is one of the biggest ship bunkering locations in Europe.

The firm previously said it had completed more than 400 LNG bunkering operations around the world, including in France, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and most recently the US and Singapore.

In addition, Shell is also building a large fleet of LNG-powered vessels.
