SWS kicks off work on LNG-powered PCTC

China’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding said it had started building the first LNG-powered PCTC with a capacity of 8,600 units for Citic Financial Leasing.

The LNG dual-fuel vessel (H1600-101) is the first in a new series of PCTCs built by SWS.

Developed and designed by SDARI, the PCTC will be 199.9 meters long, 38 meters wide, and will have a design draft of 9.2 meters and a speed of 19 knots, according to SWS.

Also, the DNV-classed vessel will have 14 decks.

The PCTC will be powered by LNG dual-fuel low-speed main engine, equipped with high-pressure LNG gas supply system and C-type fuel storage tanks, SWS said.

Up to now, SWS received orders for 16 PCTCs with a capacity of 8,600, 9,000, and 10,800 units, it said.

Seaspan and Hyundai Glovis joined forces in December to order six large LNG dual-fuel pure car and truck carriers from SWS.

The deal for the PCTCs with a capacity of 10,800 ceu also includes an option for four additional vessels, according to Seaspan’s parent Atlas.

Hyundai Glovis also joined forces with Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC) to add four more LNG dual-fuel PCTCs with a capacity of 10,800 ceu to its fleet.

Two of these vessels were said to be ordered at SWS.

VesselsValue data shows that KOLB has two PCTCs on order at SWS while Citic Finacial Leasing has booked three PCTCs at the yard. Grimaldi also booked seven ammonia-ready PCTCs at SWS.
