SWS launches two LNG-powered bulkers for Anglo American

China’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding said it had launched two LNG-powered bulk carriers it is building for a unit of mining giant Anglo American.

The LNG dual-fuel bulk carriers in question are the 190,000-dwt Ubuntu Empathy (H1546) and its sister vessel Ubuntu Humanity (H1547), according to a statement by CSSC’s SWS.

SWS held the launching ceremonies for these two ships on January 28.

According to the shipbuilder, these are the third and the fourth LNG-powered ship out of six it is building for Anglo American.

Anglo American’s shipping unit ordered these vessels directly at SWS for about $60 million per vessel, according to VesselsValue data.

Besides these ships, Taiwan’s shipowner U-Ming ordered four 190,000-dwt dual-fuel dry bulk carriers at SWS for charter to Anglo American as well.

Global miner Anglo American is already using the first out these four vessels, Ubuntu Harmony.

Earlier this month, SWS delivered the second vessel, Ubuntu Equality, and held a naming ceremony for the third ship in this batch, Ubuntu Integrity.

Anglo American expects to introduce all of these LNG-powered ships to its fleet during the course of 2023 and 2024.

The mining firm claims these vessels would deliver an estimated 35 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to ships fueled by conventional marine oil fuel.
