Yang Ming’s LNG-powered vessel named in South Korea

South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held a naming ceremony on Friday for Yang Ming Marine Transport’s LNG dual-fuel container vessel.

Yang Ming said the ship YM Wayfinder is the third vessel in its series of 15,500-teu class LNG dual-fuel container vessels built by HD HHI.

YM Wayfinder is scheduled to commence service on the Asia-North Europe FE3 service on July 1.

This series of vessels built by HD HHI has a length overall of 364.97 meters, a breadth of 51 meters, and a capacity of approximately 15,600 teu.

Earlier this year, Yang Ming named YM Willpower and YM Worthiness.

Yang Ming said the two ships are already in service and primarily operate on LNG.

To date, the two vessels have bunkered more than 11,158 metric tons of LNG, which is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 12,532 metric tons, according to the firm.

In May 2023, Yang Ming signed a shipbuilding deal with HD Hyundai Heavy for the construction of five LNG-powered containerships with a capacity of 15,500 teu.

Yang Ming will pay about $937 million for the five vessels, or $187 million per ship.

Last year, South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean also secured an order worth about $1.39 billion for Yang Ming’s LNG dual-fuel container vessels.

The order includes seven 15,880-teu LNG dual-fuel container ships.

In addition, Yang Ming decided in March this year to order more LNG dual-fuel container vessels as part of its ongoing fleet optimization plan.
